The Story
Basavaraj, one of the earliest beneficiaries of Equip India’s sponsorship program from the 2010 batch, was just 12 years old when the organization began working in his village. Affected by polio in his early childhood, Basavaraj was left crippled and relied on crawling for mobility, with his grandparents carrying him to school each day.
Sadly, Basavaraj faced the absence of his parents, as his father had abandoned the family, and he lost his mother at a tender age. He was raised by his grandparents and aunt. In his seventh grade, Basavaraj underwent surgery and received regular physiotherapy with the support of Equip India. Thanks to his determination and the assistance of orthotic devices, Basavaraj overcame his physical challenges and completed his 12th grade in his village.
Due to limited transportation options from his village, Basavaraj stayed at Equip India’s residential care facility to pursue his Bachelor of Arts (B.A) studies. During his time there, he also received training in basic computers and spoken English. After graduating, Basavaraj decided to work in a Bangalore call center as a “customer care support” staff member while simultaneously preparing for competitive exams.
Within a short period, Basavaraj’s dedication and skills were recognized, and he received a cash prize for his exceptional customer service. He attributes his achievements to the opportunities provided by Equip India during his student days. With confidence, he expresses his gratitude, stating, “My platform is Equip India. Thanks for molding me into the person that I am today.”
